The mother of the suspect in the deadly rampage at a Colorado Springs, Colorado, LGBTQ club was issued a summons for disorderly conduct and resisting arrest hours after the attack, police said. Officers showed up at Laura Voepel’s home after authorities say Anderson Lee Aldrich opened fire inside Club Q, killing five people. No lawyer information was listed for Voepel, whose arraignment is set for Jan. 25, 2023, court records show. In addition to the five deaths, 17 people were wounded in the Club Q shooting, according to police. Weeks before turning 16, Aldrich petitioned a Texas court for a name change, court records show.

Users online are sharing an image that purports to show Voepel tweeting, “Sending my thoughts and prayers” following the Colorado Springs shooting. Reuters reports on the Nov. 19 Colorado Springs shooting at Club Q and the suspect, Anderson Lee Aldrich, can be seen (here) and (here). Representatives for Voepel, El Paso County Sheriff’s Office, Colorado Springs PD, FBI Denver Field Office and the Department of Justice did not immediately respond to requests for comment. There is no record of Voepel tweeting “Sending my thoughts and prayers” after the shooting in Colorado Springs.

Aaron Brink told the news station that he had mourned the loss of his child and had gone through a meltdown. Aldrich's mother, Laura Voepel, was also living in Texas. COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — The alleged shooter facing possible hate crime charges in the fatal shooting of five people at a Colorado Springs gay nightclub is nonbinary, the suspect’s defense team says in court filings. The motive in the shooting was still under investigation, but authorities said Aldrich faces possible murder and hate crime charges. Hate crime charges would require proving that the shooter was motivated by bias, such as against the victims’ actual or perceived sexual orientation or gender identity. DES MOINES, Iowa — A Des Moines television reporter announced this week on a newscast that she will publicly identify as a transgender woman. Reichardt of WOI-TV said that for a long time she didn’t think she would be able to reveal her identity on air. She is not the first reporter to make that announcement. Voepel announced in a tweet in August that he is transitioning and would use male pronouns. In an interview with a friend who is a former reporter for the station, Reichardt said she had thoughts about being transgender in high school.
